The review of the Approved Code of Practice " Legionnaires’ disease: the control of Legionella bacteria in water systems" (commonly known as HSE ACOP L8) is due to commence from 19th December 2010. Whilst it is not known what changes may be made as yet, it islikely that there will be more detailed recommendations regarding what is referred to as ‘Other risk systems’ these include such items as water misting systems, spray washing systems, vehicle washers and indoor fountains and water features. It can also be expected to include more detailed advice on factors affecting the decisions requiring the removal and cleaning of cooling tower infill packs. These were the subject of the HSE Guidance Note issued in 2007 to clarify the guidance contained in the current ACOP and to promote a consistency of approach.
Operators of these systems and equipment should be aware of the likelihood of the more rigorous maintenance and operating requirements, and would be advised to ensure that their existing practices meet or exceed the guidance contained in the current ACOP.
